Welsh Poetry Sunday: how fascist

The poet distracts himself from and consoles himself about joyless work, lost love, and fascists by writing poems about … well, those things

Lighting Up an Old Flame
(Title from ‘Chocolate Girl’ by Deacon Blue)
Am I still obsessed with her
All these years on
Just because I write poems about her
Like this.
And the novel,
Though it’s not so much about her
As my inability to get over her
And to give up smoking.

OK so it may never get published
It’s a bit weird.
The protagonist, who isn’t me,
Is himself an author
And not altogether sane.
Any similarities are entirely coincidental.
Marriage Year
A friend rang me yesterday.
He said, “It’s a marriage year.”
Even his wife’s lifelong bachelor uncle
was looking broody
with the return into his life of
his long lost love.

Of course I thought of you
and wondered for a moment
if the world might be deciding
to give me a second chance.
It was a short moment of hope,
soon chased off by cool reason
and the lessons learnt from
twenty years of solitude.
Vitality
I wear a suit and tie
To show how important I am.
To show that I am potential board material.
It signals my ambition,
My desire to achieve,
And my management status.

It is vital to my career,
because
I'm not sure what my job is.
Foetal
I feel like crawling under my desk
And curling up in the cool darkness
But I know that I would not be able
To keep from smiling at the reactions of my colleagues

It’s almost worth doing to see just what they’d do.
Conservatives and Reform/UKIP
Fascist A, Fascist B
bickering about how fascist to be
Any fascist at all
Is too fascist for me.
